    3D exhaust

Would it hurt the engine if my buddy took his plastic exhaust resonator out and replaced it with a small metal tube? Kind of like the free flow kits for the 4-Tec's?

He has already had one plastic resonator melt, and he wants to do away with it, but I told him to wait until I find out if it will hurt the ski first.

    Thanks,
    Tim

The resonator CAN be bypassed, and removed, on either motor (800 RFI or 951 DI)...It will not hurt performance, but at the same time, will not gain performance either...

    Thanks Danny.

He is only looking to remove the resonator for peace of mind. The first time he ever rode the thing fresh from the dealer, the resonator melted and he filled the hull with water.

I believe theres a water cooling line to the plastic resonator? I can't remember on the 3d if you he will need to either plug it at the source or feed it into the new pipe via a port.

Is this a common failure? Would certainly say the exhaust gas it too hot back at the end of the exhaust system. What the heck?

There never was a cooling line to the resonator, it doesn't even show it on the microfische...I had a 99 GSXL that I bypassed the resonator, cut the plastic out...Sounded a lot better...

If it burned out on its first water run, then the waterbox regulator was not set properly...it would have burned up the coupler between the waterbox/pipe also...

As Danny said it doesn't melt until you have a restriction in the WRV. This is when, and only when, they melt.

My 2006 3d di had the same issue. It was found out that the factory was not connecting the water line that cools the exaust going into the resonator. The dealer didn't catch it either because they used fuel line for that water line. The dealer and I though it was a fuel tank vent hose at first look. Luckily I caught mine and beached it before the engine filled up with water too.
Did you know that the 3d's were built in Mexico?
