    Sportster LE speaker placement question

I just bought a 2003 Sportster LE and wanted to add a stereo system. I know the stock location of speakers for the 4-TEC version is near the shoulders of the rear deats, but that's not really an option for me as there are large cusions there.

I want to add two speakers in the bow (on either side of the bow seat) and on either side of the boat in the rear seating area.

My question is this... how can I find out if there is suffiicient space behind the fiberglass for a speaker? Obviously I can knock on the panel and hear if it's solid or hollow, but I'd like a better way of knowing before I cut a hole in my new (to me) boat... Dealer? Technical manual?

    Thanks,
    Cameron

I'd say, try to remove a seat cushion, or try to find a way to sneak a peek somwehre around your desired location, on my C180 i have removed a seat cushion, then i drilled 2 holes (where they were hidden by the seat cushion) then i stickes a flashlight through one hole, and looked in the other one with my eye, i could then see what was around.

After that i re installed the seat cushion in place (hiding the peeking holes)...there is no magic way to tell other than to find a way to look at it, or to take a chance and drill.

The dealer won't probably be able to tell....unless they already did it before.

Good call on the holes behind the seat. I hadn't thought of that. I also wonder if a stud-finder would work. Probably too vaugue.

Stud finder could work too, but the only thing it would tell you if something is very close behind, for example....if there is a molded parts behind (knocking on the hull hunting for a different sound) could tell you about the same, this won't tell you if you have enough room behind to install you speaker there.

You could also try to use the special flexible optics used in mechanics to see inside small places, these flexible optics could give you an idea of the space available in those places (some mechanics have them).

Generally speaking...if the knocking sound is good, and there seem to be enough space between the inner and outer hull, you should be fine...NOW....the only thing left is....is there something to be cut behind....like a wire, hose, cable...this you have to guess it out by the selected location...up in front the only wires there are for the green and red markers.
