The specs show the same but in reality they are quite different in ride feel and top speed.

The strakes and rear pad area are different along with some other subtle changes to the hull.
The boat planes quicker and runs roughly 3MPH faster.
The boat carves better and stays planted at higher speeds.
The extra 30-40 pounds in the 03 was due to the technique used to lay the glass and resin. The man himself went out to the manufacturer and insured the process was carried out correctly for the 04 and late 03's.
The 04 had a ride plate has 4 degree more kick.
Now it's said the early runs cranks would spin out of index easier than those of the 04. I'm a believer as I had problems with the cranki in my 03 and never with the 04.
The 03 also had problems with the stators coming loose as the mounting hardware was too long. It took a while for most to learn shorter screws were required to correct the problem.
The 03 had wiring harness issues that the 04 never had BUT I'm thinking it was more a stator hardware issue.
The injection system was refined and definitely feels crisp versus the 03. Could some of this be due to the lighter front end??
I'm sure more will come to me later or others will add.

If you want something that plants the nose sooner or quicker the 03 is the way to go. If you want nothing but all out speed the 04 hull is for you.

In stock form the 04 refinements really can be felt but if you're comparing it to something like the 15F or Honda from 03/04 the MSX140 is going to feel better and more ergonomically comfy.
Don't get me wrong, I personally feel the 03 is an awesome boat...the 04 is just better. I never did find a guy or gal that preferred the 03 over the 04 unless it was a Matrix (but that's a whole nother' story).

You may also find it interesting that the reason Bitchin Stitchin stopped making a cover for the MSX seat was due to inconsistency in the seat cover fitment. I don't know what changed but the gap on the seat from 03 to the 04 near the glove box is huge.
The 03 glove box is a pain in the ass to open, the 04 opens and closes perfectly.
The storage compartment on the 03 doesn't latch correctly (alignment issue), it's hard to close while on the trailer yet O.K. in the water. I never found a dealer to correct this condition but it's not present on the 04.

I may be too critical BUT they are the things that bothered me the most.
I almost forgot the biggest issue with the 03 versus the 04 (to me).
The boat lists as does any deep V but it was no where as apparent on the 04 as with the 03.

The 04 ride plate will get you better top speed as will the wedge. The stock sponsons didn't do a thing BUT if you can find the ones GP was selling they do get the nose planted faster.

I can tell you that the 04 ride plate with GP sponsons and a 6 degree wedge is what most wound up with on their Matrix.

The 03 really is a great boat but if you sat them next to each other you would probably prefer the feel and ride of the 04. The little things like the storage compartment and glove box are really no big deal but PISS me off when I'm in a hurry and trying to beat the next wave. Nothing like ruining a cell phone becaue the glove box wouldn't close.

On the other side of the coin, the right price for an 03 would have me spending my money.
