    broken scoop grate

We all know about scoop grates breaking on the gpr's
but today while doing 62 on the gps my fxho just started to turn left
i ended up with full lock (to the right) on the steering and it would not budge, it just got worse
it felt like some thing was pulling it to the left
after doing a triple somersault and then geting thrown under by about 3 feet
i poped to see one of the skis riding with me go past less than a foot away
he had been in superman and saw my ski go left but could not see where i hit the water due to the spray
after i got back to the ski i checked the sponsons as that is what it felt like
couldn't find anything wrong with them so checked the rideplate and then the grate
found the grate had the wing missing on the left hand side
so it seems that all the grates are no good not just the gpr ones

my grate was a riva grate but as far as i know they are the same as the R&D grates

    kev
ps. i have a cork on my leg from where i had some change in my pocket otherwise i got off pretty good

Hello Kev, Glad to hear you did not get hurt. The intake grates are different Kev the Riva is a single bar the R&D is a double bar.

i hung on to the ski for as long as i could to try and wash off speed
but i was still shocked at how much i tumbled , i think not being in superman helped me too

so do i try an R&D grate
i just had a look underneath and i can see the remaining side has started to crack
but i did have to ride more than 20 miles back to the ramp(stayed under 40mph though) not sure wether that put more stress on it or it was starting to fail anyway
didn't notice any cracks 2 weeks ago when i was under there

Had a broken grate also on my 04 HO cruiser a couple of years back but caught it just in time. Riva replaced the grate.

i think that is what I'll do
the R&D specs say that it can be up to 1mph faster
the riva one just says no lose of top speed

i think there were warning signs as there was a mark in the paint like a cavitation burn on the wing of the grate and i think that came from the crack
as i noticed it on one side first
first noticed it after the week at tiplers in january
only riden about 5 times since then

Jerry said the r&d is also a single bar. I'd like to get one but don't know who is right?! And if the single bars are blowing up on the FXHO's also, then I definatly want a two bar. Someone PLEASE help. Thanks
