I bought my first Garmin etrex at Walmart. They are the yellow ones and are $89 now.

But I since have gone to the Etrex legend as it has the built in North and south america Base maps. I like that for riding the lakes.
    $139 Now on Sale.

I like my Plain Etrex. Yellow one.

While not cheap, I swtiched over to the Garmin Quest and it is by far the best GPS I have ever used. I literally take it everywhere. Step by step directions and a full color screen, waterproof, and RAM makes a mount setup for it that easily attaches to your handlebars.

    I've bought a few units from :

    http://www.gpscity.com/item-garmin-quest/quest.htm

Install pictures of the mount :

The only thing you really have to worry about are the battery compartment - or in the case of the Quest, the terminal. Otherwise if they are waterproof, the rest of the unit will be fine.

The Garmin GPS76 series actually float - I tested it in my sink before putting it on the ski when I had that one.

Look into the RAM mounts no matter what version you have - very sturdy mounts, fully adjustable too.
