    Head gasket installation tools

I've always been worried about putting the head back on the motor and the head gasket shifting a bit and generally things just not sitting quite right when trying to install all 24 bolts into the head. It was even more of a concern on my 1390. I just wanted a way for all the bolts to drop right in easily and not catch on the gasket.

I picked up some stainless M8x1.25 x 120mm bolts from Mcmaster, part number 91287A319 and made some tools for piece of mind.

With 4 of the 5 bolts I cut the hex head off and rounded the edges a bit. I installed these 4 cut off bolts into the jugs, 2 on either end of the motor. This allowed me to use them as locator pins to put the gasket on, then the head. Once I snugged down a bolt or two, the pins unthread easily from the top since they are so long.
I don't have any pics of the bolts installed in the jugs but the pics of the bolts themselves will give you the idea.

Also, for the 5th bolt I used a dremel to cut some grooves in the bolt to use to clean/chase the threads with some cleaner to make sure they are nice and clean so they'll torque accurately. I realize they make a thread tapping tool but I've never been real comfortable using a tool that is designed to cut threads. Let alone use it to try to clean the threads from an aluminum bolt hole.

Then I found an attachment for my shop vac and taped a straw into the end. The straw allowed me to vacuum out the bolt holes...yes I'm anal.

These are just some things my old man used to do when he would rebuild our motorcross bikes as kids and carried over for me to the skis. I'm sure you guys have your own little tricks to accomplish the same tasks.
    Good Luck
    Doug

For the gasket put a very thin layer of water resistant grease all over both sides of the gasket surface and torque to spec..
