    Wood Decks And Porches

What kind of wood do you have on your decks or porches?
What do you use on it as far as a treatment to keep it from rotting?
I need to get some porches and a deck built so give me some thoughts and ideas guys!
    Thanks

Look into the plastic stuff ,,,sounds funny but we(at work) replaced 25 boat slip and docks with the stuff 5-6 years ago,,
all i can say is WOW still looks new ,,evan with all the birds/pelicans crapping all over it ,just washes off..
    more money,less upkeep,way long lifespan
check it out --- my 2 cents **go cheap on toys-not investments**

Use Pressure treated wood OLNY. (the green wood). It's always best to stain it with an Oil based paint. These last the longest but are really messy.

it is like recycled material, and it is like impossible to get a splinter from and lasts like forever..

pressure treated with oil based coating if you want to go cheap i hate thompson sealer. just my 2 cents. it dont last.
the plastic like boards if you want less upkeep and more durabilitybut its pricey.
Im a carpenter if that helps you decide.

    ... I agree w/ baja - Thompson sux - I use Behr's oil-based deck treatments - work great - wood looks great - easily redone/touched up when needed ...

Thats the way Iam swinging! Now which kind of pressure treated wood since there are so many brands-manufactures out there?
This I guess also depends on what local lumber yards, Home Depot or Lowes carries.
That other than wood stuff I did a Google search on it and did some reading about it will have to pass on it JMO!
Thanks for the info so far guys keep it coming!

Yep, Thompson's is a complete waste of money and seemingly does nothing, even the more expensive mildew inhibitor one. I like Behr Premium Semi-Transparent Weatherproofing stain for my dock, but even though it's supposed to last 6 to 10 years, I still find that I have to add a fresh coat yearly to the walkways exposed to the sun. When you're figuring the cost of wood decking versus plastic composite, remember that stain is expensive, messy and sux to do! It originally took 75 gallons to do this job, and about 15 gallons yearly to maintain:
