Lightbulb in need of gas shock for front hood

i just bought a 2000 model polaris pro 1200 and I guess the previous owner missed the recall for the part that keeps the front hood raised. If anyone has the gas shock, or whatever it is, lying around that wants to donate or sell, please let me know. or even if you know of another way of rigging something up, im all ears too. thanks a bunch!

    Recall? What recall?

I am putting together a hood strut kit with a Stainless Steel gas spring, and a different design tether strap.

I am a number of weeks away from having something ready to go.

If your Pro 1200 uses the same OEM strut and tether as the 2002 Virage TXi, then I might have something for you.

Let me know if your Pro1200 hood hinge is similar to the Virage TXi

    Complaint: RECALL 030113T
PWC hinge could fail and permit the hood to separate from the deck. The hood could strike the operator and/or passenger resulting in personal injury or loss of control.

    Product/Model: SLH personal watercraft
    Product/Model Year: 1998
Complaint: Great difficulty getting engine to run, it hesitates & dies, dealer says this is normal. Cracks in lid of fwd compartment: now so severe water leaks in. Electric gauge cluster failed. Parts have vibrated loose. Long delays getting repairs, difficult to communicate with Polaris.

    Product/Model: Polaris 2000 SLX
    Product/Model Year: 2000
    Complaint: See Recall 030113T
PWC owner was badly injured when the hood on his PWC detached and hit him in the face. Accident occurred 8/03 about a month after he bought the boat. Eleven days after leaving the hospital, he received a recall notice (see Recall 030113T). He sued Polaris and was awarded $3.4 million in damages following a civil trial in Kalkaska Co., WI, 46th Circuit Trial Court. Polaris had offered to settle for $100,000-$350,000.
Complaint Resolution: From news article in Travers City Record-Eagle 10/22/06 http://www.record-eagle.com/2006/oct/22award.htm
    http://www.northernexpress.com/edito...es.asp?id=2117

Product/Model: Polaris SLH (purchased used in 2002)
    Product/Model Year: 2000
Complaint: Consumer transferred warranty immediately after purchasing used PWC.
Months later, friend was operating vessel and got hit in face when boat's hood flew off because hood latch broke. Polaris told boat owner they'd never heard of such problems, they wouldn't help because warranty had expired. Owner repaired hood himself. Year later (in 2003) he got a postcard from Polaris about recall on hood latch problems. Polaris won't reimburse owner for money he spent on repair.
    Complaint Resolution: See Recall 030113T

    Product/Model: Virage I & Virage TXi (2829 boats)
    Product/Model Year: 2002
    Complaint: RECALL 020091T
Incomplete molding of the fuel tank could cause fuel to enter the boat, possible fire or explosion if ignition source present. 2829 boats are potentially involved however less than 50 actually have the problem.

    Product/Model: Polaris MSX 150 (PLE33777C404)
    Product/Model Year: 2004
Complaint: Owner says boat handles fine until you bring it up on plane (~25 mph). Then ski rolls over to port & stops on chine. That's until 45 mph when it straightens out & is fine. Owner is concerned: boat is hard to control before it straightens out.
Complaint Resolution: Owner wasn't happy with manufacturer's advice to take boat to another dealer for sea trial and possible repairs.

    Product/Model: PWCs
    Product/Model Year: 2004
Complaint: December 2004; Polaris announced that it will no longer produce PWCs. The company will assist dealers in liquidating inventories and will continue to provide service, replacement parts and warranty service on existing product. Polaris president Tom Tiller said the company's position in the marine market was not what they wanted it to be.

    Product/Model: MSX 140 (4,187 boats)
    Product/Model Year: 2003, 2004
    Complaint: RECALL
Insufficient clearance between fuel return hoses and fuel injector brackets may create abrasion points allowing fuel to leak into engine compartment; creates possible risk of fire/explosion if ignition source is present.
Complaint Resolution: BSC labelled this entry w/ recall #030113, but that is the number of a different campaign, no record of this recall in Coast Guard database...

    Product/Model: MSX 140
    Product/Model Year: 2003, 2004
    Complaint: RECALL 040079T
Clearance between fuel return hoses and fuel injector brackets is insufficient. Contact may create one or more wear or abrasion points in the hoses, allowing fuel to leak into engine compartment. This creates possibility of fire/explosion if ignition source is present.

How do you tell if a Polaris has the original defective hinge, or the corrected verison?

Could someone post photos of what actually fails in these defective hinges, and what the replacement/improved hinge part looks like?

My understanding is the correct way to fix this problem is to use the kit for the Pro's using triple pipes, it was a triple pipe hood latch kit. I just picked one up I'll post some pics when it comes in and I have it installed.

Any idea's on the gas shock supports, mine doesn't have one either and was thinking of eventuall adding it.

Can somebody post dimensions, photos, and specs for the OEM gas spring in this application?
Particularly the numbers on the side of the spring unit, and how long it is extended and compressed.

I need to understand how it differs from the later Virage/MSX hood hinge.

Does the recall retrofit hinge use the same gas spring as the original hinge?
