    Removing paint from gelcoat

The previous owner painted on the registration numbers. Now they're chipping and I purchased new registration numbers from Exotic Signs. How do I remove the painted on numbers without damaging the gelcoat. I tried using a razorblade but it seems to dull the gelcoat. Any other ideas?
