    550 electrical problem

Picked up a 85 550 a few days ago. It started a few times but most of the time it just cranks with no spark. While testing the electrical system I noticed the red wire coming from the stator is reading very low on the multimeter. I then took off the flywheel cover and a couple ounces of fluid drained out.

    Question 1
Do you think this sounds like the stator needs to be replaced or could the water just have been shorting it out?

    Question 2
Dose anyone know what the AC reading for the wire coming out of the stator are supposed to be

    Question 3
Is there anything I should watch out for in taking off the flywheel to clean up or replace the stator? Is it just taking off the main bolt and pulling off the flywheel? Is there anything that i need to know about to not mess up the timing? Im new to working on skis any help would be great.

    Thanks Kevin

    Exciter Coil test

Red on 6 prong to red on meter
Black on 6 prong to black on meter
    Select Rx100 ohm scale

    Should read 112-168 ohm

    Pulser Coil Test

Red on 6 prong to red on meter
Grey on 6 prong to black on meter
    Select Rx10 ohm scale

    Should read 14.4-21.6

    CDI Igniter

Spart Plug Boot to Spark Plug boot (doesnt matter which is +/-
    Rx1k

    meter should read 4.5-6.7k ohm

Okay I did the test. Exciter was only reading around 3 ohm. Pulser was 19 ohm and CDI was 5 ohm. So it looks like I need to replace my stator correct?

3ohm is about a dead short. I would agree the stator is gone

sounds about par for the course. Brake cleaner works good for drying it out as well.
