98 GSXL electrical problem - cutting out

Took it out on Saturday to blow out the cobb webs and it had the following problems:

    - Low voltage indicator light at start up
    - Starts and idles fine but then cuts out completely when rmps get into the mid/upper range, power loss is to dash as well as motor.

This problem developed after apx 20 minutes of riding, the boat worked fine when it first hit the water. The problems now persist when boat is cold on the trailer.

All wire connections appear to be good and all fuses are intact.

Anyone familiar with this problem so I can minimize the trial and error?

    Thanks

    Tim

Loose ground or weak battery. Check battery voltage first. Then grounds.

I definately agree. You should check & clean your grounds. How old is your battery? I got a battery you can try.

Problem not solved afterall. Took the boat to the water and it ran perfectly for 5 minutes then began cutting out. After getting back to shore it now has no power whatsoever when key is inserted...complete cold break. Battery charge was 12.7 cold and 13.7 while ski was running, all fuses are intact and all power/grounds clean and tight. I am thinking I will pull the stator assembly off of another 951 tomorrow to swap and test. MPEM test will be next if this doesn't remedy the problem.

Would this be the correct next step?

I don't think it's the stator. Shavings from the starter bendix can get lodged between the magneto and pickup...I'm more inclined to check this as the culprit. Or the pickup itself is cracked on one of the mounting ears.
