    XL1200 & GP800 w/ Blown engines

I have two Yamaha ski's that have bad engines and need to be replaced based on diagnoses of local dealer. The '99 XL1200 has a bad cylinder w/ no compression and it has no power and shuts off after it runs for about 3-5mins. The GP 800 is seized and will not crank at all. I can hear the engine try to turn, but will not crank. The hull and body's of both are in good shape so I have to decide if it is worth dumping the $$$$ into them ($3K for GP800 & $3.8K f/ the XL1200 remanufactured engines).

    Any suggestions out there???

    Thanks, Bill

Have you thought about doing the work yourself... i feel the guys on here can walk almost anyone through a rebuild... just need a camera and some patience and you'll knock those prices way down...

Thanks for the response. I bought this XL1200 two years ago and found more salt corrosion than I originally suspected. I am concerned that if I rebuild then I just may have more problems later on. I am considering a replacement block from SBT and rebuilding the carbs. I have no experience w/ this and may try to find/pay someone local to assist me.

I am near Raleigh NC. The two skis are at the dealer right now.I think the GP may have taken water in the engine. I removed the plugs, but it still would not crank. The XL just started cutting off, then no power.

Fix the 1200 and pull the 800 out and sell off the good parts. Then Call racers edge in CA, they have a billet motor that starts off as a 701. They put there DASA head that has power valves and 90 mill piston. Plus its stroked. I think it ends up around 1000 cc. I garentee this motor will out preform the stock 800 by far. I dont know how to post links to other threads but there are pics of it in the Yamaha 2 stroke area. I think it was call billet porn or someting. If your interested PM me and I can dig up more info on this
