do you mean the cone that has the o-ring or the small plug that screws into the cone?

for the cone (with the o-ring), they recommend putting some anerobic gasket maker around the mating surface between the pump and cone. by design, you shouldn't need it as that is the purpose of the o-ring, but i have found that the fits are not what they should be sometimes and the gasket maker is required.

for the plug, i do wrap some teflon tape around it before installing.

I put 518 on the oring and the plug threads. You used to be able to buy the 518 cheap at Pep Boys...but I don't know if they still carry it.
