2 charged in theft of personal watercraft
A personal watercraft that had been handed over to a man for repair work was found months later stripped and floating at the Port of Pasco.
Eluterio Morfin Camacho and Joel G. Santana, both of Pasco, are charged with first-degree theft in the case.
In early 2007, the owner of the Sea-Doo watercraft asked Santana for help in fixing its mechanical problems. Santana reportedly took the watercraft to a friend.
The owner contacted Santana several months later to check on the progress, court documents said. Santana told her he would check on it, but never got back to the owner, documents said.
She waited a couple more months before calling Santana for an update on the repairs, and again he said he would check but he never returned her call, court documents said.
That's when the watercraft's owner started getting calls from men claiming they had just bought the Sea-Doo and wanted the title. Each time the woman said the watercraft was not for sale and ended the conversation, but not before recording the phone calls for police, documents said.
Camacho was identified by Pasco police detectives and Santana as one of the callers.
Just days later, the owner was notified by police and Franklin County sheriff's deputies that her watercraft trailer had been found in the Columbia River and the Sea-Doo had been stripped with only the hull remaining, court documents said.
Camacho, who turns 29 Thursday, pleaded innocent and is scheduled for trial June 17.
Santana, 39, also pleaded innocent and has a July 16 trial date.
