HELP!!! engine surges @ WOT on 96spx

I need help with a 96 spx with a 720 engine, when you run it @ wot the engine surges and the only way you can get it to stop is to hold the choke out, what could be the problem? I've cleaned the carbs and filters in the carbs, bypassed the fuel system with a direct line to the tank from the fuel pump and even tried a different fuel pump with no change, checked fuel pickups in tank, filled with fresh gas. Any help would be appreciated!!!

if holding the choke helps the problem, then yoou are too lean, open the hi speed screws 1/4 turn.

"Bypassing the system" meaning the remote filter/seporator and fuel valve too right? Check your plugs and see if they're lean, If they are, you didn't do something right in the carbs (if it's a stock setup) you shouldn't have to adjust (compensate) high speed screws, depending on the altitude. It maybe a water leak. Does it run good at idle? and mid?? If you've bypassed the remote filter and valve, checked the vents, and did the carbs right I'd look into water leaks (exhaust and head cover) and maybe take a look at the oil injection hoses if your not premixing. But what do I know I've only posted 11 or so times on this site but I've been fixin these things for 18 years.

    more info!

yes, I ran a fuel line from the fuel pump to the reserve pickup on the tank. I also drained the fuel tank again to rule out the possibility I didnt get all of last years fuel out the first time, and went back thru the carbs to make sure I didn't miss anything. I tried adjusting the high speed screw and it helped but didn't correct the problem completly.

Would having the top end bored .075 over cause this problem , do I need to rejet the carbs to compensate?

sounds to me like you have a split fuel line or are sucking air. I would check the fuel lines on the carbs after the fuel pump since you bypassed everything else.
