    PWC Newb

Howdy...we were hoping to get some ideas/help choosing the right pair of PWC’s for the wife and I. We’ve always had Yamaha dirt bikes and want to stay with Yamaha into this adventure. I just need to find out what the differences between the GP and the XLT are. Is it simply that one is a two-seater and the other a three-seater? Are there big differences in speed or handling? I’m looking at 3 separate pairs of Yamahas and was hoping to illicit opinions on what may be the best deal. We are just looking to cruise and maybe pull the occasional tube or skier. Any advice would be greatly appreciated…we’re at the mercy of the boards. All of our friends are mudders…we don’t know any lakers (we’re going to be the first in our group of friends!).

    1st pair….1998 GP 800 ltd……89 hours
    …1999 XL1200 ltd…..46 hours
    Sportsman trailer…………………...asking $7200 for all

    2nd pair …2000 GP1200R…..86 hours
    ….2001 GP 800R…...50 hours
    2006 trailer…………………………..asking $8800

    3rd pair….2000 XL 800…….99 hours
    ….2001 XLT 1200….44 hours

    1999 Shorelander trailer…………….asking $8800

Thanks again and looking forwarding to being a part of the forums!!

Hello and welcome to the forums.

It all depends on what you plan on riding in. If you plan on pulling tubers then you will need a 3 seater(xl-xlt) if your looking to go fast and have alot of fun the the gp/gprs are a good choice.

I have a gpr and my cousin used to have an xlt both alot of fun, i was always faster but the XLT handled the rough stuff better and had more room for storage.

...stick With The Power Valve Mtr .

is the power valve motor available on PWC's after 2000?

So bascially if deciding between a 2000 GP 1200R (stock w/ 86 hours)
and a 2001 XLT (stock w/ 43 hours) would either one be more dependable than the other? How much faster is the GP 1200R? And does the XLT have that much more stability? Sorry for all the questions...I just want to get it right! I'm a newb in the PWC department so thanks for bearing with me!!

    just a thought..

why don't you ask the person with the GPR and the person with the XLT to meet you at the same time both there at some lake, so that you can take one out.. then come back and ride the other..

then you know which one you like better, you know it rides good, you know basically that you want it.. and then you could be like well i like this one better and if it is more expensive than the other one you could be like but that one is cheaper.. do you want to cut me a deal? and ask that.. you never know that guy might want that thing gone!

Hallpass....great idea...but I couldnt pull it off...scheduling with both parties was a problem. Went with Stingray152003 and pulled the trigger on option # 2....got the package for 8K even.....now hopefully everything checks out. I went to the Yamaha shop with my check list (thank you forum members....they actually thought I knew what I was talking about!!) and should know tomorrow....now I just need to find some dough to do the mandatory mods (anyone in the Colorado area need their lawn mowed!!)
