GP's were made between 97-99 (as far as 1200's go). The GPR started in 2000 and is going to end in 2008. The GP is lighter, more playful, and accelerates better. The GPR can be modified with great results and will leave a GP on topend. What exactly are you wanting to know?

Is there a point when one is to old? Yamaha's are supposed to last forever.
I was trying not to spend over $3,000. What make or year should I be looking at?
Mods aren't important to me.

Mod for mod, the GP will be faster out of the hole but the GPR will be faster on top. There is still a lot of after market parts out there for each.
The carbs on the GP are much easier to get to then the GPR.
If you look around, you could find a realitivly low hour 2000 or 2001 GP1200R for $3500-$4000.
