Best to tighten it in a vise good, and use a set of jumper cables grounding the neg. to one of the ears, touch pos. to the terminal. Try stopping the gear against a piece of hardwood. I use to use the wooden handle from a wire brush.

I am assuming if you can stop the gear the starter is weak.......Should the gear extend out when power is put to it?

The bendix will extend, not the starter.

solenoid is ok, all connections are good, battery good and starter test ok using the above method. Could one assume bendix is bad? or could there be something else. From what I read the bendix is a pain to change out. Anyway to test bendix?

Any trick to pulling gas tank? The oil tank is also mounted on to of the gas tank. Is this the best way to access the bendix?

More than likely, yes. Other option is pulling the entire engine...

What year and model ski is this?

You should be able to unbolt it and just slide it forward,I don't think you have to totally remove it. The stator cover and flywheel will have to come off.

What is going on with the starting?
