Unfortunately, Polaris was not making enough money from their PWC sales to justify continued watercraft production. It is a shame because their final MSX models were very good boats.

My understanding is that one factor was a large award given an injured Polaris rider, after she fell of the back and was injured by the jet blast. I remember reading the court records, and the judge stated that although Polaris was not making any ski that was any more dangerous than the competition, and Polaris did a reasonable job of warning of the potential dangers, the plaintiff was due the huge settlement.

Add to this the environmental attacks gaining momentum against PWC's...and they simply made a corporate decision.

Very sad...I have a MSX 150 (which is very green, respectively), and would have loved to see this great machine evolve even further!

Wouldn't Polaris Industries have insurance for this type of thing?

Maybe the first time, but going forward, the premiums might not be acceptable.

I thought it was mainly because BRP bought the FICHT, and that's what polaris needed to advance with the 4 strokes? and teh fact that they never really turned a profit

Exactly...once the camel's nose was under the tent...!

If the court sets the precedent that the manufacturer's efforts were reasonable, but not free from the liability of injury (however frivilous), then the manufacturer is 'whistleing past the graveyard'.

I am sure that this was only one reason, of several, that persuaded Polaris to drop the line.

    The profit part...very possible.

As for the 4 stroke needing FICHT...my MSX 150 is Bosch, and as far as I can tell, Bosch has a long history and is pratically bulletproof. I can see Polaris having a seizure losing the FICHT rights for their MSX 140...this could have taken them totally out of the 2 cycle market.

Are companies still allowed to produce two stroke watercraft?

    Oh, yeah....

But why buy a ski that could be very easily banned by the time you open your next newspaper?

There are some serious efforts to do just that currently in play...I can link you to the facts, if you are interested.
