Question Getting a starter out of GP1200R

I just got a new starter for my 01 1200r and I'm going to put it in myself but I cannot get the old one out. I took out the two screws but I cannot get it out. Its pretty rusted but I have stuck extensions down there and hit it with a hammer but it will barely move. What else do I need to do? How can I get it out? Thanks

Pull the exhaust and see if you can get better leverqge on the starter. If it's rusted bad, you probably have problems with the bendix as well. You need to pull the stator cover to see if your bendix is rusty.

Alright, I finally got it out. I took out the exhaust but it ended just just comming out. But i do still have a problem. Take a look at the pic, the little o-ring part broke off in wherever it goes. The starter was in the worst shape i've ever seen! What do I do now????

You are going to have to take the front cover off and tap that thing out. I have never seen one this bad before. Has this thing been sitting full of water?

I think you better get that motor pulled and see what's going on upfront you may have more issues than just that starter. Can you turn the motor over by hand?

Its a new motor. I had it running for the weekend and then it just wouldnt start. I kept messing with the start button and It finally cranked and I took it out of the water and back to my house then I flushed it out and the starter hasnt worked since. I brought it to a repair shop and they said just by looking at it that it needed a new starter and that it was going to be $500 to put a new 1 in so I thought I would do it myself. Then they were going to redo my carbs for $950!! So I picked it up and brought it home and just bought a new starter for $90 and my buddy is going to redo my carbs for me.

Derek, if you get this before you call...

Do like I said and try tapping the piece thats broke and screw a bolt into it...

Or your going to have to pull that front cover off.
