    Mixed results with R&D grate

I put the R&D grate on my P-X and T-X with mixed results. Stock @ 5 hrs I ran 69 mph on the T-X. Stock @ 5 hrs i ran 70.1 on the P-X and ZERO cavitation out of the hole on both skis.

Installed the R&D grates and today with Block offs and R&D grate I ran a solid 71 on the T-X. Block offs and the R&D grate i ran a solid 72.5 on the P-X. B U T... On the T-X I had light to moderate cavitation out of the hole. The P-X had llight cavitation out of the hole.

I loved the top end gains... but I will go back to the stock grate if I cannot find a solution for the cavitation.

    Any suggestions?/

so with stock and R&D intake grates u had no cavitation...

then u added block offs to the skis that already had R&D grates and felt cavitation?

block offs wont change that... check your wear ring tolerances or something... doesn't make too much sense

Sorry for the misunderstanding. I had the blockoffs on since i took delivery of the skis.. Stock was fine... no cavitation with blockoffs. Since i introduced the R&D grates on both skis I'm getting cavitation.

    Any thoughts?

A forum member told me to make the R E A R of the R&D grate look like the stock grate. I assume he meant cut it down short like the stock grate. Before i go grinding off, it still puzzels me that I seem like the only one on the forum complaining about "out of the hole" cavitation with the R&D?

Ed, notice how much thicker the R&D bars are on the upper pump side of the grate? The water will not come off smoothly, it will tend to pull a pocket of air as it comes up off that thick flat surface, causing cavitation. The stock grate is much better in that aspect, the top of the bars narrow nicely. The first thing to do is to make the long front to rear bars knife edged ON TOP ... NOT on the water entry side, but on the top. Remember the airplane wing, you want the same thing - rounded blunt bottom is fine, but as the bars go up they should taper and the top of the bars should be knife-edged. This allows the water to come off cleanly with far less turbulence than if the edge is big, flat and broad.

Notice the channel between the grate and the ride shoe. Sealing this area will help. Try this before cutting.

Unfortuately, you can't have it all on one grate.
