Need to think about trailer shake and vibration with a switch and float.

The switch would need to be protected so it doesn't get ripped apart by the bouncing while driving, or by snagging a rope or toes at the launch ramp.

I still think sealed LED trailer lights and properly sealed trailer wiring are the way to go. No moving parts, no failure mechanisms. No special care, or need to unplug before immersion. No blown bulbs causing grief on the road (or law enforcement issues).

i have LED's.. and i used ultra seal hi-temp raychem on all my splices.. however, the LED's still take in a little water...

    ANYTHING is possible...

i was basically looking for an experiment for the weekend, lol

A suggestion from way out in left field,...
fiber optic lighting, light source(s) mounted high up on the winch tower where it's dry, with fiber optic conduit running to the lamp locations ala lucifer lighting .

Just another suggestion...Run a kill switch up to your dash or under your dash to disconnect power to your trailer when backing in..

I still use the old school method of upplugging my trailer while I am disconnecting my rear tie down. I do use led lighting, but just not worth the chance of some wire being exposed and blowing a fuse..

You could put auto resetting circuit breakers in line on the truck side right before the trailer plug. That way, no matter what trailer you plug in, the circuit breakers would open before the fuse blows if you ever have a short to ground due and then would re-close as soon as you pull out of the water, etc.

While I love to build crazy projects I think in this case if you use a switch to cut the power to the lamps as the trailer hits the water the bulbs will still be hot and still break. It would help with the electrolosis (accelerated corrosion) of the conductors as they are submerged in water especially salt water.

I actually have LEDs on the back of the trailer(as the 10+ yeard old light fixtures fail I replace them). I was trying to prevent damage from my CRS(Can't Remeber S***)
