Bogging Problem with 2000 XL1200 Ltd UPDATE w/ pics

Hi, all. Been lurking all winter, so not too many posts. I know you guys like background, so here it is. If you want to see question, jump ahead.

    1. Bought 2000 XL1200 Limited last fall. All stock. About 43.5 hours on it.

    2. Had "tilting" problem. Research showed it may be rounded sponsons. Had local dealership install new stabilizers under Yamaha recall. Worked like a charm.

    3. Temp Sensor kept going off, so had D-Plate and chip sensor installed.

    4. I drained the Yamilube last weekend and put in Pennzoil Marine Full Synthetic 2-Cycle Oil (TC-W3). Ski worked great.

    5. Took ski out yesterday. Ran great to our destination. I dropped wife off on beach, so I could get some speed (she doesn't like to go over 25MPH). She got up to 48. Had some fun. Then the ski flat out died on me while going 35MPH! Fired it up; bogged- couldn't get above 10MPH (with lots of hesitation), went about 50 yards; and died. Some trouble getting it to start (but I believe that is because battery charge was low. Waited 60 seconds. Then, same thing: fired it up; bogged-couldn't get above 10MPH, went about 50 yards; and died. Again. Happened about 5 times to get it to shore. We decide to pack up to try to find our way back (7-8 miles). Same thing: trouble getting it to start; waited 60 seconds; fired it up; bogged-couldn't get above 10MPH, went about 50 yards; and died.

Finally, found some very kind boaters who towed us back to the ramp.

Another note: there was some gurgling noise towards then end. Sounded like fuel coming in spurts.

    6. Went by auto parts store. Said that battery good, but low charge.

    7. Engine ran okay on trailer as I flushed it for 10 minutes.

    8. Checked water separator. No water. Checked fuel filter. Not clogged. Just performed oil air bleed (screw next to idle adjustment).

    9. There was some water in the back of the ski, about 1 1/2 inches. Couldn't get it out by tilting it back, so I took some rags and soaked it out.

    10. Still runs okay on the trailer.

So, I am having a bogging/dying ski. My plan is: order Waveater clips/couplers and install next weekend. I don't know whether carbs ever rebuilt. I kind of doubt it as everything else is stock. I'm debating whether to try this myself or take it to a shop.

Not sure what else to do. I guess I'm looking to see if anyone else had similar problems with the severe bogging and dying.

    Thanks in advance.

Ok first off check your spark plugs (might be as simple as fouled plugs) if this is not the problem, check cylinder compression next.

Okay. I went to store to get deep socket for spark plugs. Pulled two of them, and indeed they are blackish. Based on the Service Manual, it appears they are fouled. Do you think fouled plugs would cause performance this terrible, including automatic shutting down?

Check compression..don't run it anymore, not even on the hose..

Bought compression guage. Read through instructions as well as this thread...

Trying to figure out how to (1) keep ignition from turning over and (2) keep throttle in wide open position... Then I'll let all know about compression.

did you remove all three spark plug wires from the plugs?

Will that keep engine from turning over? Here is pick of third plug...

It is different from other two. First two were covered in brackish oil. This one seems to be almost corroded, and the tip is bent so there is almost no gap.

Also, I started removing power valve covers. Here is pic of center PV with cover removed.

Still can't do compression yet. Battery low, and charging. I read that battery must be charged for good compression test. Also, still trying to figure out how to prop open throttle.

Took off covers to first and third power valves. First two pics below are of first PV. Second two are of third PV.
