R&D Intake Grate Problem
I was on the last ride today. I started to feel a strange vibration and then the ski seemed like it overstuffed. I was barely able to stay on. There was a lot of sea weed in the bay this weekend so I though maybe the holes in the pump shoe got clogged. I pulled the ski out and the intake grate was no where to be seen!!!!!!
I assume the front bolt pulled out. I installed the front bolt with locktite and silicon. The threads do look screwed up but there are still some there. It did take some gelcote with it. I guess I'll be through bolting the grate for now on and installing a nice big fender washer.
Enjoy the carnage!!!!!

Man, that's messed up. I will be checking mine today, but when installed, I did NOT silicone it....just some locktite blue.
Always wanted to know how one of these rides with no grate on...good thing you didn't suck in any hardware into the pump or this could have been alot worse.

I think part of it can be attributed to R&D closing up part of the intake. That extra metal that comes out is exposed to the down force of water. That is an extreme amount of force and I can see how it would just be ripped right off.
I think a modified stock grate with pump shoe holes is going to be the way to go. Not sure of the design of the modified stocker though.

Now you're scaring me...this is starting to happen to more than one person?
These guys better figure out what the deal is or they could face a class action lawsuit if people start to get hurt as a result of these failures.

Has anyone contacted R&D about the problem ? Interested in if they say it is due to the pressure relief holes being drilled into the grate.

looks to me in this particular case what u need to figure out is why the front bolt came out first because thats why it broke the way it did.........obvioulsy it folded back after the front bolt came out..........all the more reason to thru hull bolt the front of the grate like i suggested many times.........the back can hang down all day and most times it wont hinder anything except top speed and handling.........as u can see IF the front bolt goes and the back ones dont........its OVER!

Don't forget beachbum is running 80+ mph, I assure you R&D didn't test them to that speed on an X ski. But GBA is around 70, and his RIVA did the samething so......hmm
