Question wierd trouble after replacing ring and impeller

Ok i replaced the impeller and wear ring on my 96 XP and took it to the lake saturday to test it out. First ride out from the ramp, i went WOT for a minute till the ski was revving but not moving. It seems like a clutch was slipping or perhaps the driveshaft came out of the impeller. During idle and partial throttle it would move. I was limping back to the dock and when i gave the throttle a crack at WOT, it seems like something slipped back into place and it took off.

Did not really have any more problems after that, but what could have happened? Did i screw up something?

i would tear it down and inspect the thrust bearing and washer. might have gotten pinched during assembly.

No, i know for fact it was ok. I purposely made sure it was ok. There was very minimal thrust movement after installing the cone and the impeller spun freely very easily.

You most likely spun some debris on your driveshaft. It takes very, very little to make it cavitate like crap.

If you did something wrong, it wouldn't suddenly correct itself.

You did reinstall the c-clip on the driveshaft right?

Did you install the rubber grommets on each end of the driveshaft?

c-clip? I never took the shaft out and the only thing i removed was the pump housing. Something I was missing?

Yes, i did reinstall the rubber grommet on the impeller that the driveshaft slid into.

Inside the hull, slide the SS ring toward the rear of the ski, against the accodian boot. Moving it 1/4" rearward should expose a metal C-clip. If there is a rubber oring in the groove instead this may be your cavitation problem. Originally...SD installed an oring to locate the SS ring. Over time, the oring would collapse, and flood your hull. SD had a technical service bulletin out on this, but your ski may not ever been updated.

+1 the first time you get something stuck on the prop it scares the poop out of you. It usually clears its self. -if not a LONG set of needle nose is your freind.

If you didn't have the shaft out this shouldn't be a problem.
