    I have the 2004 FX High Output Service Manual - valve clearance (cold)
    Intake -> 0.11-0.20 mm or (0.0043-0.0079) in
    Exhaust -> 0.25-0.34 mm or (0.0098-0.0134) in

    If the later models are different - I would like to know - I bought the manual since I will be in the market soon for a FXHO

    It's my understanding that you measure them all - remove the cams - see what the pads are and put in a different pad to bring the valves into spec. I'm thinking that most won't need changing but do you need a whole pad kit or just a few from the dealer?

    As far as valve clearances are concerned, `04 to `08 FXHOs have the same specs

    Adjusting pads are available online per piece. You need to measure first all the clearances and record those that are out of spec. Start measuring from cylinder 1, then 2, then 4, then 3..

    And - you need to recheck the measurements after its all back together - If you did it right you won't need to redo any.

    What is the symptoms of valves needing adjustment?

    Happy new year all!

    So if the valves clearances need checking after 200hrs (according to yammie service manaul) has anyone had to make adjustments? Or is this dependant on a per ski bassis?

    What I am saying is, is this a precautionary check or is it a definate that they will need adjusting?
    Also what is the effects of having valves clearances out of spec?

    Im at 200hours right now and wonder if I should go another season (30-40hrs) until I check.

    Thanks guys

    To check the clearance is only a 1hr or so job, Dont skimp check them now and then make a decision,wondering if they are out will only cause you to get a headache

    If your valves are out of spec you may experiance
    poor idle quality
    power loss
    hard starting
    excess tapping noise if they are very loose.
    there are more possible problems, but these are the basic/common signs

    either way check them,then you will know if they need doing.

    I done 80,000km on my 2001 R1 and always used good oil, and when I decided to check they were all in spec, even tho you would have thaught otherwise.
