New Member with an Odd Problem
I have a 95 SLT750 I got from an old friend tired of throwing money and time into it. He owned it a couple of years and maybe changed the plugs once! He might have even greased it once. He put in a new battery this Spring and when he started it with hose hooked up it would just go wide open. I looked it over for him once and all the carbs and throttle cables are working normally. Only ran a couple of times for few seconds each because of the WOT on the trailer. This is my first ski but I am a GM mechanic and have owned, raced, and rebuilt many 2 stroke singles(YZ-KZ-RM 250's)and have never seen this kind of problem. I downloaded the manual and will post compression/fuel pressure soon. Gas is new, removed diaphragms and inspected and checked the needle/seats. I plan on rebuilding the carbs and updating to triple pump and premix.

Hi Pryor, WELCOME tothe Green Hulk Forums.
I have 2 possibilities.
If it were mine I would start it and leave the choke on as it will bring the RPM's down. If you have a primer, keep priming it and the extra fuel will keep the idle down.
You can also start it on the trailer with the pump in the water (under load) and let it warm up and see where your idle is (1200-1350RPM in the water).
If it warms up and the idle settles down it's probably a lean running condition.
Check and replace all the fuel line
Check and replace the fuel pump
Make sure the carbs are clean and fresh with no blockage.
Let us know what you find.

After talking to the previous owner again last night it sounds like he did not winterize the cooling system properly! I did try putting the pump in water with the choke on and I could keep the idle down to a manageable level but would return to WOT as soon as it was turned off. Ran for a total of 4-5 minutes and was running very rich. I plan on tearing down to look for bad gasket or possibly a crack due to the new info of improper winterization. Thanks for the great feedback and I will post my findings soon.

Yep, sounds like a massive air leak, pressurize the engine and let us know what you find.
