    Angry Polaris 2001

    Here goes!
    Where will I find a service manual for a 2001 Polaris Virage (700 2cyl)
The problem I have is that it starts and idles OK but as soon as I squeeze the thottle the engine revs rise only slightly and it starts banging.

I don't have access to a main Dealer so I'm trying to resolve the problem myself.

I've drained all the fuel lines and replaced the fuel.
I've had the carburetta ultrasonically cleaned (professionally cleaned, not by me in the dish-washer)
I've replaced the plug leads, the plug caps and plugs.
The engine has been compression tested and both cylinders show about 10Bar
I swapped the plug leads this way and that and it doesn't seem to point to an electrical problem on one cylinder or the other
The wretched machine simply won't rev!

There's not a great deal of fuel in the tank - will the limiter be preventing the revs increase?
Has anyone come across a similar problem and what did you do to correct the situation?
    Has anyone got any suggestions

    Welcome to the Hulk!

Tell us where you are located, if you don't mind sharing

You can download the 2002 Service Manual here. Your 2001 Virage will be similar.

What RPM are you seeing when the RPM stops rising?

The 2001 and 2002 Virage will limit RPM to 3500RPM if fuel level is low, OR oil level is low, OR the engine is overheating (sensor is over 114 Celsius, 180 F). The MFI display will say Low Fuel, Low Oil, or HOT.

It may also limit RPM when the reverse sensor is active (MFI display says 'Reverse').

The RPM limiter will cause the engine to appear to run roughly, as it turns the ignition system off and on to limit the RPM to 3500.

You can fool the system into thinking the fuel tank is full by disconnecting the electrical connector to the fuel tank sender. Connect a 33 ohm resistor between the pink wire and electrical ground (Black wire) in the connector. 33 ohms is the resistance of a full fuel tank sender.

If you actually go riding with very low fuel, the RPM limiter is there to keep you from feeding aerated fuel into the carbs, which can cause engine damage at high RPM. If the 33 ohm fuel level bypass does allow the engine to rev up, remember that riding it that way on the water (with very low fuel in the tank) can risk engine damage.

I Live in Ramsey in the Isle of Man.
I'm a lot happier now having got your advice on the limiter.
Think I'll go and get a jerry can full and see what happens!

The extra 15 litres didn't help!
    Worth a try though!
Ah well, just have to get the brain back in gear.

What does the fuel gauge show after adding the fuel?
What RPM's does it limit at?
    Maybe a bad fuel float?

    Thanks for the comments.
The fuel gauge does show an increase in the tank contents.
The engine revs to about 3000 - 3500
I haven't checked what the limit is in the manual yet - but I will do

O.K. so the other limits are an overheat orlow oil level. Does anything flash on the MFD? Red light? Oil?

I forgot, what's the boats history?
Did it get water in the hull about the time you started limiting?
    New plugs?
What were the events leading up to the RPM limiting?

    No warning lights
    Everything seems normal
Just can't get the revs to rise
Have now downloaded the manual (thanks for the address) and will probably now start testing the electronics to see if I can spot the gremlin there!
    Cheers

Everything was fine all last season.
Plenty of fast runs in calm and roughish seas.
No water ingress into the hull at all
Put the ski away in September in a good running state, brought it out again in April and couldn't manage to get halfway down the harbour to the sea.
