    98 Gsx Piston Blown

I lost compression a week ago and finally got around to taking the head off and looking into the cylinders. The piston blew and is chewed up looking around the edges as well as the edges on the head cover, the dome is fine just around the edges it is totally beat up. Anyone have any ideas of what could of happened? Water ingestion, lack of oil some sort of debris?

    Mike,

I've done that to the mag piston. My piston/head is more beat up cause I knew what I did and road it back to the launch on one jug (a miss-timed 475cc). With all that, the fix was a light hone, a new head and proX pistons & rings. The crank and bearings were untouched.(it still runs strong for the new owner)

In my case the ring caught on the exhaust port and introduced a piece of the piston as new moving part in the combustion chamber. My failure was a lean condition due to agressive jetting & timing combined with a 40* drop in temp, diff gas grade and no warm up.

Q:are your fuel lines changed and carbs clean?

i took apart the engine the other day and it looks like the cylinder walls and piston sides are untouched. The piston ring was broken so im thinking that it could have been the same problem. Do you know why your piston ring broke off?

the sort os semi circle impressions make it look like piece of ring came off. usually if bearing goes you will see pieces of it/them lodged in the head.

    is your ring intact?
