Thread: high compression?

here is my question i have a 94 xp end of last year i did the top end the compression on both cylinders is 160 psi. should i run premium gas the dealership said that if you run premium gas that is why i had to put a new top end is this true what is stock compression on this ski

A '94 XP with an *unmodified* 717 engine should push approx. 140 +/-10 psi. There is no truth to that dealers statement of premium fuel useage *causing* you to have to rebuild your top end, however, if you are truly running that high of compression, you should be using premium fuel to avoid detonation.
I would recheck that compression, cold engine, using another compression gauge just to verify that high 160psi number.
What thickness Base Gasket did you use under the Cylinders for your rebuild ? What was your squish clearence ?
