    xlt exhaust mod question

After a bit of help on my 2002 XLT 1200.

I was told if I remove the exhaust muffler sction from the water box to where it joins the exit (inside the hull) it will give me a bit more bottom end and sound sweeter without being a nuisance noise.

Firstly, will it make a difference and if so, do I remove the whole section of just the middle piece ? and where is best to buy the stright through pipe to join it back up ?

    Appreciate any advice.

Second question, I ride mainly in the sea, but am doing club lake racing this season, I have a stock intake grate, what would be recommended to improve.

Aside from a 12/18 impellor and worx sponsons, ski is rebuilt stock, including carbs at 65 hours

Riva and others sell a "Free Flow" exhaust which replaces this plastic silencer. It can be just a section of pipe and clamps, or a longer 1 piece hose. Its been my experience that its pretty loud without the silencer, but I have a GPR, and the XLT may not be as bad. Too loud for me though. It can be quieted up some if you use a 1300 GPR muffler/waterbox, as it has a different chamber on it, thats what I changed to at a good bit of improvement over just the FF.

Many thanks LT1 GMC. Will give it a go with a longer piece of hose and see how that goes. If it's gonna get complaints from the shore I can always put the muffler back on.

Out of interest, did you remove all the plastic muffler or just the centre piece ?

cheers, will give it a go, if it's too noisy I can always bolt it back on.

Lethal RX&, did you notice any performance difference or was it purely sound ?

    I have 2 XLT's.

    Both have free-flows.

    They sound great.

    Nice and deep under 3000rpm's.

Once you open the ski up, I can't tell much of a difference.

Just do it, you'll like it.

Just to prove no one answer is right....I absoultely hated the FF exhaust. The sound between 3K and 5K RPM's was unbearable.

With the 1300 waterbox and the Blue FF tube it is better (have heard it but never ridden for a long period).

Cheers m8, I'm looking for the low end revs for wave jumping and holeshot for club racing, so not too bothered about top end. For the radar runs I will bolt the muffler back on. I'l let ya know how I find it and will try to time the 0-40 on GPS to see if there is a difference on the flat

Hey dude, you keep talking about the Muffler. I hope you're not referring to taking the waterbox out. The Sound-supression tubing is what you remove. Have a look here: http://partsfinder.onlinemicrofiche....=13&A=117&B=26
You remove Parts: 6, 14, 15, 16 and replace with the Free Flow exhaust.

If you want to do it a cheaper way buy a piece of 90dia. pipe 150mm long. Remove: 14, 15, 16 and take part 6 turn it around and join your 90dia pipe between Part 18 and 6.

As far as acceleration goes it does seem to have a little more bottom end, although that could just be cause it sounds louder so it seems faster. I don't mind the extra noise, however will agree its not for everyone.
