    96 xp pump removal help

We are in the process of removing the pump to have the impeller reconditioned and install a new wear ring.

We cannot get the pump housing out from the rear of the xp. We have all the bolts, and the hoses going into the pump out. I think it is the driveshaft holding it up. Could someone explain how to get the driveshaft out. Also this boat has been taking on alot of water. How do you know if the carbon seal is bad? We removed the pump from our 03 gtx sc and it all just slid out without a problem.

    thanks,
    Mike

The pump assembly is "glued" on with what is usually a crazy amount of Loctite (red). This gasket maker is a TON of fun trying to get off the hull.

The shaft doesn't really do anything. Although when you give the pump a final yank, make sure someone (or something) is holding the shaft FORWARD and UP so it doesn't screw up the bearing on the carrier side (towards the motor) or fall on the floor.

Rubber mallet and lots of cussing.....keep pounding and yanking.

    Thanks,

So the pump assembly will come out and leave the driveshaft in, just like on the gtx.

How do I know if the carbon seal is bad?

And should I reglue the pump back in? It looks like the black rtv is only on the top of the pump.

Took me about a half hour, alot of hitting with a rubber mallet, and alot more cursing to get mine loose. That fukker was siliconed on with about a gallon of RTV.

    O.K.

I got it off! A little pulling and a little prying and it came off.

Could someone tell me how the carbon seal is supposed to work. I cannot figure how to get it off. How much play should there be between the seal and the driveshaft? There is a 1/8" gap between the carbon seal and the spacer on the driveshaft.
