    Stator Problem Need Help!!

I have an 86 JS-550 with no spark, the guy who owns it broght it to me to fix, before this he decided to take the flywheel off and check the stator, he said it looked fine and couldn't figure out where the no spark problem was coming from. when he put the flywheel back on the woodruff key got pushed out and was loose in the case, in the process of taking it back off i had turned the crankshaft over a couple of times and noticed a little grinding. once i got the stator off again there was a nice gouge in the cloth rapping around the high voltage wind and about 6-7 of the very thin copper wires are broke.

now does this mean the stator is toast? will it still produce and spark?
can i fix this without buying a new stator?

any help on this would be very appreciated!!

you can email me at [email protected] or respond to this, i just need to get this done quick, thanks again...

I would think now with the broken wiring the stator should be replaced. A stator can look good but those windings are pretty intense and a burnt wire could occur in the center somewhere or right at the laminated core. I don't know how expensive they are to replace but these guys will rebuild them for about $150.00. As soon as they recieve yours, they call you up and ask how you want it shipped, then that day you have a good rebuilt on the way.

I would also pull the plug caps off the high tension leads and snip about 1/4 of an inch off the leads. They have a tendency to back out of the leads just enough to stop any spark from getting to the plugs. I would also check the pulser coil...or some people know them as the pick-up coil.

is it on the stator or the wires coming out of it?
