Spark plugs good? make sure you have the right heat index.
I have a 96 SLX as well, make sure your plugs are BPR8ES, and they are gapped correctly. Mine runs a strong 6650rpm at just shy of 60mph, all stock!

Where did you line the stator mark up at?

    Did you verify timing?

i never verified the timing...just lined the mark up where it was with the old stator...

If it never had this problem before you changed the stator, I'd put my money on the timing being off a little. Not exactly sure how you time these engines but I'm sure someone does.

    gap

if the stator before helped it perform at top rpm and speed, it might not be your plugs; however it is a definite plus to make sure the correct plugs and gap are in place I believe.

This might have something to do with it.

You should have BPR8ES plugs gapped at .025-.028.
