    SL 650 Stator Problem

I am having a problem keeping stators from burning out. I have replaced it twice and they only last for about 30 minutes of ride time. It runs great at first then it starts loosing power and backfiring. Anyone have any idea what is making them burn out.

    Welcome to the Hulk!

Do you have the protective Polaris plastic cover in place on top of the battery? Is that cover completely preventing the battery posts and cable ends from touching the electrical box?

Have you removed, cleaned and re-tightened the negative battery cable at the engine block?

When you installed the stator, was there solid electrical contact between the stator ground and the engine block?

    Welcome to the Hulk Travis.

Do you have the correct CDI in there? If it's a 750 or 780 CDI with the 650 stator that will kill the stator. 650 uses analog signals, while the 750 and 780 used digital signals.

I have a question. I've read what you said on a # of different posts, but I'm confused. If the 750-785 cdi won't work on the 650s, why will a 650s cdi work on a 780? Especially if there is a digital - analog difference? My 780 has been run w/ a 95 650 cdi, and sold to a guy w/ a 750. How does that work?

CDI is correct, grounds all checked out good, I did take readings on the stator with a multimeter, and the battery does have the cover on it.
