Newbie here... Hello and issue... 96 Raider 760

I've got a 96 Raider 760. A little history. I pulled this thing from behind a guys garage. Got it for $300 w/ trailer. Cleaned it up, repalced the cdi, took the carbs apart and cleaned it, put it back together, it runs okay, I still need to adjust the low speed screws, and install a primer kit since she's a hard start. No worries there, stuff is on the way.

    New problem last night...
I start it up in my driveway before I headed to the river. I get to the river, get everything ready to go, start it again, it fires right up. I put her in the river, park the truck, hop on, start it up again, my wife is holding me to the dock while I rev it up just to be sure (since I'm on the river).
I start to head away from the dock, and it dies. No display, she tries to turn over but nothing. I never get my display gauges back.

Help?? I checked the fuse in the black box, it was fine. The battery back at home shows 11.84 volts just sitting. What else to look for?

And, here it is for good measure...

    Kronbar,
welcome to the GH forums. I'm going to go ahead and move this over to the Yamaha Old School Section. We got some good folk in there and this will get better exposure.

Checked your kill switch? They're junk usually (like mine).

The stop switch, or lanyard key? The lanyard pull seems to work fine, it won't try to turn over w/o the lanyard key.

    Edit:
Am I supposed to have continutitity across the 2 contacts inside the red kill button?

    And thanks Hydro.

Misinterpreted =tries to trn over but nthing=.

Check for spark and fuel if the motor is spinning but not running/igniting.

Fuse, and wires are only thing you should need to get display to atleast to startup proc. Check for power on red wire i guess; or unplug battery and hook back up, display should come on for a few seconds.

According to wire diagram red/stop and green/start are both normally open.

So no, you should not have continuity across it; until you push the button.

(p.s.: i'm looking at a raider 700 manual, but i believe the systems are the same)

I'm betting you have no spark. Check it. Grab an old plug (MAKE SURe YOU GROUND the old plug) and put a spark wire on it, turn it over, probably no sparky.

And i'm betting that if you unhook, and rehook your battery the display will come on for 2 seconds. Display won't really 'work' until it gets ac/generator signal on green wire (aka when the ski is atleast at idle speed).

I think the thermostat switch would create your no run condition, might could unplug it and see if problem is remedied (but i doubt it).

I'm thinking you either lost the cdi, the generator, the regulator, or the temp switch. edit: or anything in the ignition system.

I'm gonna be torqued if the cdi tanked, it's brand new.

    I'll check those others.

    I have spark.
Also used my new compression guage. 150 front / 142 rear. Borderline %10.

I'm going to see if I still have the old cdi unit. That one wouldn't shut the motor down. The only crappy thing, is the dealers in Omaha don't carry much for parts for the "old school" skis.

I'm supposed to pick up another one Saturady. 97 Kaw 1100stx. It has carb issues I'm told. I can fix mechanical problems. I hate electrical.
