2003 xlt 800 neww engine but slipping?

I replace the engine in my 2003 xlt 800 and it's great on the water hose. Sounds great and runs great. However in the water the rpm's get really high before the power hits the water and I start moving. I'm thinking wear ring but I did not have a problem with this before the motor change. I'll take any and all suggestions and comments. Thanks.

Maybe the shaft spilnes are stripped if the impeller looks good
