Plastics on top of engine are useless and cause rust

I decided to take the plastics off on top of the engine to find most of the heads of the bolts are rusted. Those plastics are useless and just trap water in there. If you ride in salt ware you may want to remove both plastic head covers and have a looksee under there. I cleaned mine up and sprayed them down with a protectant.

It protects the saltwater drops from my seat and I feel safer when I wash the engine down. I just clean under it and spray it down with bomb lube, silicone or fluidfilm everytime I flush and wash the ski.

Thats what I thought till I removed it to find my nicely rusted bolts. The main culprit is the one that snaps to the head of the engine that says Rotax on it. You can not spray lube up under there. Go head, give it a looksee........

I could see how that would be a concern... but the plastic is so pretty

Without the plastic it looks like my R-12x minus a cyl.... is there a point to the plastic?

Does nothing but makes it look pretty. Actually the reason I took it off was because some grime kept comming out from behind the plastics, so I took it off to clean it and BAM! There was the nasty. I have to clean it up some more, but now that it is visible I can make sure it stays free from water sitting in the bolt holes and stay clean.

IMO leave it off I had the same prob. It was just unbeknowns to me to take it off.......... when I did, not a pretty site
I just Leave it off now and the bolts get a good splash when I spray the motor...would suggest you leave the manifold cover on specially if your in salt all the time take it off after every ride and give in there a spray as some how the salt gets in there aswell..
