What to buy!!
Im looking at buying a seadoo boat 18 or 20 foot. I was looking a at 2003 speedster 1800 with a 240 HP 2 stroke??? Can someone tell me about this boat... good or bad??? Are the 2 strokes motors good or should i go 4 stroke??

If I was looking for a boat in the 18' - 20' range, I don't think that I would be looking for a jet boat primarily because of the inefficiency of the jet pump compared to an outboard, I/O or even inboard (like a ski boat). With gas on the water being around $4.50/gallon, I would definately be looking at a 4-stroke. I would stay away from 2-strokes in a boat that large due to the increased maintenance and repair costs. A friend of mine at the marina just bought a new 19' Whaler with a 150-hp 4-stroke Merc outboard. He paid around $45-k plus another $2500 for electonics. It was kind of pricey, but he's happy... Ron

I do know from what I have seen, the 2-stroke jetboats are a handfull on the maintenance end along side of the fuel consumption being quite high. Sea-Doo used to keep them in production but went with using Mercruiser inboard 4-stroke engines. Possibly because of the future environmental requirements at the time the 2-strokes were still in production. Plus if the oil injection pump ever gives up on the 2-stroke you're not going to be happy with the repair bill after the engine blows up. That could have been another factor in Sea-Doo changing over to the Mercs.

A friend has a Sea Rayder F16 with a 175-hp Mercruiser powerhead. It's still a 2-stroke, but runs really well. It will run around 55 mph with 2 on board. He's had it for sale for around a year, a still no buyers... Ron

i thought that the Mercruiser jet drives were 2 strokes?? i do think that the Mercs were fuel injected though. my dad has a '98 Sea-Doo Challenger 1800. it will run about 50 MPH but drinks down gas with its twin 787 carbed 2 stroke engines

The 175-hp is definately a 2-stroke. I don't know if it's fuel injected or not. My guess is not. I just helped him when rocks got to his impeller & stator in the jet pump... Ron

a seadoo jet boat is good for neither being a good boat or for being a fun like a jetski, its the worst of both worlds instead of the best, trust me thats why you can buy a used 18000 one for 6000 two yrs later takes some looking but you dont really want one !!!JMHO>Marvin
