    To Buy or Not??

I have a guy here in town that has a 96 sl 750 for sale that he says needs a starter and computer. Would the computer he is talking about be the CDI that runs the thing and does anyone have one laying around they would be willing to part with??

You have come to the right place. Try John Ziegler here on the site. I am sure there ar others, especially in the classified section. How much do they want?

Some people might call the MFD digital display a computer.

You need to get a better idea what parts are needed, and why he thinks those are the needed parts. Wouldn't be the first time that the previous owner's idea of what was wrong was not entirely accurate!

If you want to check on used parts, look in the Polaris Classifieds forum, and check with John Zigler, who has a lot of used Polaris parts available. If you don't see what you need, send him a query.

Also, you can download the 1992-1998 Polaris Factory Service Manual from here.

If the machine has been sitting for any length of time, it may well need the carburetors taken apart and cleaned. Not a huge job, but you should assume it will need doing.

If the carbs (or anything else in the fuel system) is not 100%, you should NOT ride it until you have everything cleaned up and working as it should. Otherwise, you risk burning a piston or two, sometimes in just a few minutes.

Often the fuel pump also needs to be rebuilt, or upgraded to a better one (about $30), and the old fuel lines all replaced. Nothing that should scare you away from buying it, just be aware that most of these machines are NOT 'just get on it and ride', unless the previous owner really did stay on top of the maintenance.

Plan to take the time to go over the machine and get things checked, cleaned, and 100%. THEN you can enjoy the ride, knowing that you have taken care of the most likely sources of trouble.
