    96 XP Problem...any ideas?

I just bought my first two PWCs last week and took them up to the lake this weekend. I have a 1996 XP and a 96 SPX. We dropped them both in the water and rode them around for about an hour with no problems at all, then the XP started to slow. It would only go about 10 mph and wouldnt go any higher. Then after awhile, it just completely stalled. The engine would not turn over. Occasionally it would start up and stall out after about 30 seconds. We charged the battery and waited overnight and then in the morning it started to run just fine again for about an hour. It then stalled out and had the same problem, except it wouldnt turn over at all. I charged the battery again and replaced the spark Plugs. one spark plug looked like it had some black sledge on it and we noticed the plug cover was loose so we tightened that. We replaced the plugs and put the new battery in and used a jump kit and started it up and rode for about 30 mins and it completely stalled again and i had to be towed in. I noticed before it stalled the XP started to slow and sputter a bit, so iknew the stall was coming. Anyone have any idea what could be wrong? Does the black sedge mean anything? Also, sometimes the key doesnt double beep unless i put it on there 3 or 4 times. nIm so concerned because this is my first experiance with these things, so if anyone can help I would really appreciate it, thanks a lot.

Sounds like crap in the fuel lines-tank-carbs. The crap settles after it sits. When you start running around it stirs it up and sucks it back into the filters eventualy plugging them. Either that or it's somthing else, but I would start there.

sounds like the battery isn't charging. the ski will die when the voltage drops below a certain voltage.
get it started on the hose and check the voltage at the battery it should be over 13 volts. if it's not check for blown fuses. if fuses are ok then it's probably a bad rectifier.

Welcome! Your ski isn't charging your battery. If you think about it you answered your own question. Either the stator and/or rectifier is bad. You need to pull the front cover off the engine to inspect the stator for burned windings. The rectifier is in the gray box, nothing visual will confirm it's bad. If the stator inspects good, change the rectifier and see if it is at 13.9 volts @ 3500 rpm. Right now you can put a meter on your battery with the engine running and you will have the same or less voltage, than right before you started it.

    Good luck!

thanks alot guys....im gonna try that when i get home today. i also forgot to mention there was no spark most of the time but occasionally it would spark up...im assuming this has to do with the same battery problem?

Yes, it is the same problem. This ski is very voltage critical...the spark is weak on a fully charged battery. So your non-existant spark makes perfect sense.

Post us up a pic of the stator when you get the cover off.

    Happy wrenching!
