Looking at the Rule 25-S 500 gph. pump. It's automatic using a float. Wondering how much water it takes to float the float? Don't want to wait until there is 1" of water in the bilge before it kicks in. Any experience with this one?

The rule floats used to use mercury in the float switch and worked great. They now use a ball bearing which works sometimes. There is no less reliable piece of equipment on so many boats today, IMO.
Yes, the switch will need to rise a substantial amount to work. Also, sloshing water tends to make these on-off cycle a lot. A sensing unit would be better.
Still, you need a way to turn it off in case you are pumping your crankcase oil out (a bad day anyway - you don't need to be paying a fine on top of it).

I have a 1300 that has a bilge pump on it which seems to work fine, and I have 2001 gp1200r that has the same looking pump on it which does not seem to work at all, was the pump stock on the 1200 ???
