    Rotary valve question

    I just finished tearing down a friend's yellow 580 engine. A Crank rod bearing let go and got alot of metal everywhere.

    My question is, that on the case, where the rotary valve goes, it is a bit chewed up. Lines up to .005" deep around where the valve sweeps on both sides. Also, on one of the ports, there is a small chunk taken off.

    Is this serviceable, or do I need used cases or machine the ones I have?

    you'll never notice it. maching would be the call on that, and the outer ring needs ot be taken down by the same mount. can't recall the clearance number, but it's something like .015-.030 i think. that's a guess, it's in the manual.

    You'll never notice it.... meaning leave it or try machining it?

    if it's just a screw around rec boat you wnat to get going asap i'd just leave it. it won't run "perfect", but will run fine.

    machining is the way to go to do it right....that or get new cases. considering the cost i'd probably lookfor cases and then get those machined if you need em later. 580 yellow can be had for cheap. hell, i have a set you can have cheap.
