How hot is too Hot huh...?

Regarding the drive shaft housing and the bearings it holds.

Mine gets hot.........................ouch............! cant hold on to it right after i stop i pull out the seat and i touch it.

It transfers the heat to the coupler and the coupler gets hot...............

doesnt get red hot but it does it hot.

So then.........................how hot is too hot huh..............?

Im assuming youre talking about the through hull coupler? That gets warm, but shouldnt get hot. Did you ever grease it? A lot of people grease it after each time out.

yup...i removed the coupler shroud/cover because doing routine checks on the motor i reached underneath the shroud/cover and touched the coupler and it was hot.

so i removed the shroud/cover and traced the heat source to the drive shaft housing bearings................................

the bearings transfer the heat through the shaft to the coupler.....................................

They're more of a bushing than a bearing.

My coupler gets hot, but the thru hull is only warm.

    that sounds about right then........................

it does get hot in that area...........................just wondered because there is no noise no were........boat does idle fine at between 1300 and 1500 rpm's ........................................if anything if something was bad in there and wanted to freeze and figure it would stall the motor.
