BUFORD – A combination of Gwinnett and Forsyth firefighters pulled two people from the Chattahoochee River Thursday afternoon.

Around 3:30 p.m. Gwinnett Fire responded to a report of two people caught in the river about a half-mile south of the Highway 20 Bridge between Buford and Suwanee.

As the dam was released a strong current trapped the two, a man and a woman, who, according to Capt. Thomas Rutledge of Gwinnett County Fire, are experienced kayakers. It is believed that the man’s kayak may have capsized. Both were stranded on a tree stump in the middle of the river.

Firefighters worked quickly to remove the pair. “A Forsyth County firefighter on a jet ski reached them just after 4 p.m.,” Rutledge said. Just before 4:30 p.m. they were removed from the waters by a rescue boat from the Gwinnett Fire Department.

The man was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center for evaluation of non-life threatening injuries. The woman was not hurt.
