how do you get that d*** nut off?

i have a 98 xpl that i just bought. i am trying to the carbs out for a rebuild cause it wont run (have the grey fuel lines, plan to change them out). but in order to just get to the carbs i need to take that first section of exhaust pipe off. i got all the allan bolts and stuff off but the only i cant get is that last nut underneith between the carbs and the pipe. so my question is, how do you guys get that d*mn thing off?

i tried a wrench but there like zero turning room and do to this i cant even tell if i'm using the right size wrench.

I'm no expert on the XPL, but I've taken the carbs off of GSX-Ls many times w/o removing the headpipe. In fact I'd just as soon leave it alone.

If you have to remove it, it requires that you either buy the special wrench or bend & grind one of your own until it works (this is what I did).

    Good luck!

You don't have to remove the pipe to get the carbs off...unstrap the oil tank and slide sideways to allow room to fish the carbs out front.

but i would like to see what it is i'm doing down there being my first time trying this.

so you need a special wrench for that one nut? any idea how much one costs or pics of the one you made so i can have an idea of what i need would need to do to one of my old rusty's?

P.S. i have to give you guys props. i have checked out several other forums and i have to say that you guys are the most helpfull and the most knowlegable at helping others (like me) fix their rides.

Dang...you guys make a job into a project real easy!

The pipe never has to come off, unless you are repairing the dreaded manifold to headpipe leak. Otherwise...look at it as a challenge to do carb installs on the blind...
