Drive Shaft Noise: What Causes it?

Is the characteristic drive shaft noise heard when on the flush hose due to gear mesh on the pump end of the shaft? I assume on a 4-Tec it is not on the PTO end due to oil bath. If noise is excessive, then the best thing to look at is the impeller splines (and driveshaft)?

From reading and rebuilding, I think you can also get alot of noise on the shaft due to engine alignment being off causing the floating metal collar to rattle against the carbon seal.

Mine is dead steady at the carbon ring. I am more leaning to spline wear as a cause on this ski. In the impeller nose there was quite a bit of corrosion. Anyone seen this as a cause?
