HELP with spark problem on 94 SL 650

Just picked this machine up yesterday from the dealer who decided he was tired of working on it.

the machine idles EXCELLENT, but when you rev it up it bogs down, like in limp mode. when checking the spark it has weak spark when idling and when you accelerate it goes away.

    any ideas?

    Welcome to the Hulk...

Check all the grounds and clean them.. The Manual is in the tech section. OHM out the stator specs are in the manual on the wiring diagram.

    weak spark

did all the ohm testing as per the wiring diagram and no change.

    here are our results.
alternator coil: should be 0.6 ours reads 0.8
trigger coil: should be 220 ours reads 225
Pulser Coil: Should be 90 ours reads 67
exciter coil: should be 490 ours reads 525

honestly, we don't know how to read the ohm meter very well and the last two readings were more like 66.8 and 52.5

the machine idles awesome, but as soon as you accelerate it you lose spark. Is this a stator problem or a CDI problem, and how do you know for sure?

Your readings are close. Is the battery good? It sounds like a fuel problem.
Can we get some more history on this?

the battery is new, but there is one section with no water in it so it isn't great. He doesn't feel that it is a fuel problem, but we are not sure.

the only history that we have is that the local dealer had it in his fence and doesn't have the time to repair it. he felt it was a stator problem.

can you tell me what we need to check as far as a fuel problem? he swears up and down it is spark based on the fact that when he tries to rev it up the spark disappears completely.

Start with a GOOD battery. Have the carbs been inspected/cleaned?. We like pics..

i was mistaken on the battery. that was on a different vehicle that we changed. the battery is a new battery.

he says there is absolutely not a fuel problem, he can see the fuel shooting out of the carbs. the ski seems like it goes into limp mode, though we know there is no limp mode on this model. that is how it acts.

it sparks at idle, you rev it no spark then it goes back down and sparks and so on all while holding the throttle in the same position.

so by doing the ohm testing earlier that shows that the stator is good?

    Ohm test the coils.

    Ohm test the plug wires.

Ohm test the spark plug boots.

Try unscrewing the plug boots, cut the plug wires back 1/4" (or until you get clean wire) and re-screw the boots back on and zip tie. Some times the wires loose a solid connection.

Did all of the above tonight, still no fix. I guess we are going to tear into the motor itself now.

Apparently this is not a common problem??

Can you try another (known to be good) CDI before you tear into anything?
