    98 GSX-ltd

    Hey, stupid question.

I am helping a friend that just picked up a pir of 98 GSX-ltd for a good price. One of the units needs the fuel baffle looked at (float looks like a sinker) and the VTS on the other unit. The VTS blows fuses when the up/down is pressed. To remove the unit, do I need the special tools like the manual states or can I pull the pump assy off the ski to get more room to the nut on the VTS shaft? Ski's will be at my house on the 29th of Aug so I have time to make somthing if needed. What typically dies on these? Gears, motor or electronics? I have the 98 manual from one of the guys here so that gave me some info. Looking to get these on the water soon as cooler weather is not far away.

    Thanks in advance.

I didnt need a special tool to take mine out and look at it, unless it is taking it out further than I did. I think my XPL is the same setup I could be wrong. I found a broken wire on my motor for the XPL soldered it back together and shrink wrap and it works good as new. I know someone on the site found a Nissan window motor was the same and you can search for his stuff if its a motor.

Pull the pump and you can acess the VTS nut with a 12" Crescent wrench. All can be out in less than 15 minutes easy. Pull the cover off and see if it has been filled with water previously. It's either motor or VTS housing controls need replacing.

A couple of cheap 32mm deep sockets welded together and you don't have to remove anything but the VTS. Cut the drive end off of one & you have an ultra-deep socket. Why pull anything but what's necessary?
