Looks like cooked valves, were you running lean?

Possibly detonation what kind of octane were you running?

    Just some thoughts.

Looks like a leaking head gasket. Coolant in the combustion chamber. What symptoms led you to a tear-down? More info/history would be helpful.

Deletion of the knock control on the Rotax ecu is just stupid! Guess I kinda understand since its a race ECU, and you'd rather cook an engine than loose a race, maybe.. But any type of bad gas situation, too hot an intake charge, or running hot and that ecu just runs right along detonating into the sunset.. They could have at least still left it enabled, and just turned up the threashold, anyway, thats a rant for another time...

I have one too, but no knock control makes me nervous.... All I'm saying is I bet with an OEM or Riva ECU this wouldn't have happened!

i did have a head gasket leak, thats why i tore the head off, so do you think it was water in the cylinders? i personally dont as i take lots of car heads off and have never seen this thru water, i have been running the rotax ecu without the fuel controller, as ive had 2 faulty controllers, my revs uesed to be 8400, but for the last 20 hours have been 8250, so ive been nowere near the limmiter, i also use our uk unleaded fuel, which should have the right octain, i think its 98!. ive even removed the rude charger to see if its been touching down and sending forigen bodies thru the intake, its mint above and below the wheel, this will be my 2nd detonated piston problems in 85 hours of use, so as the tital says has anyone come across this. ps i'd better get on to jerry and get 3 pistons ordered
